The thing is, this repeated several times live on TV in the last few days. He kissed her on mouth after she completed her performance, and also touched her butt...
What's going on here?
Is this a Texan style or Russian style?

as soon as my husband and i saw that we ewwwed. she's a little too old to be kissing her dad on the mouth and he had his eyes closed - even weirder and the mom wasn't there.... i'm not insinuating anything, but the whole thing is kind of strange to me. why wasn't her mom there? she was sight seeing in beijing???
the touching her butt i haven't seen, so i can't comment on that but if it was more of a slap, i think that's ok. they're athletes, but if the hand was there too long or it was more of a stroke or grab - that's even weirder. i know they're russian (and russians do that, not texans!!) but still, i think it needs to be toned down a notch.
strange, strange. they definitely don't act like the normal father and daughter.

I kiss my mother in the mouth. A lot of non-US families do. My Italian friend told me if he doesn't kiss his mother (on the lips, OOOOH INCEST!!!!), she'd say something like "Whassa matta? You sick!?" I can't imagine kissing my dad on the mouth, but that's because I don't kiss my dad. But I know women who do. Just a peck, nothing serious.
As for the butt slap, give me a break. I slapped my mom on the butt yesterday while she was damn near dying on the stairs as we were going up for the 4th time. What can I say? I was behind her and if she'd fallen on me, I wouldn't have been able to hold her big butt up. 
Americans are so...ugh. This isn't Hulk and Brooke Hogan, for crying out loud. Now THOSE are some creepy folks. |

I noticed it too and did a private ewww when I realized it was her dad -he doesn't look that much older than her -I honestly thought it was her beau. So it registered as a bit weird to me. But anywhoo - she did GREAT last night! Almost flawless -and by far the most enjoyable to watch. Shawn looks like she's going to beat the routine into sumbission by overpowering it. The Chinese gal didn't add any peronality to her stuff -I enjoyed the Russian and Nastia the best.

that's common in gymnastics for europeans to kiss their coaches on the lips if they really do well. the butt thing is also common- kinda like football players do to eachother.
back in 1984 at the wrolds, the two russian co-gold medalists kissed eachother on the mouth and they did a freeze frame of it as the end scene on the medal podium. (abc sports coverage).
