My husband and I are planning on moving on or about August 1st. We'll need to book an apartment (ideally with a month to month or 3 month lease), as a temporary place to live while we find jobs and then house hunt. I've made a list of apartment complexes that offer short term leasing...is it too soon to start calling yet? Will they know at this point if they'll have vacancies come August?

I'd call now to get a feel for what each says and offers.

I've been looking for a short-term and getting "no vacancy" for a couple of months ahead.

Can't hurt to find out in advance.

The main thing is how to get them to take u seriously......!!! I have called places in advance like that, and unless u apply, and fill out an application, and send them a deposit they don't really take u seriously, But on the other hand the apt complex's are probably easier to do that with than a private party. I have called private parties, and they are unsure of my intentions. I guess u can't blame them.......Because they are small and it is a risk for them to have their apt vacant, much more so than an apt management company.

You can always try a Residence Inn or Extended Stay America for a short-term stay while you look for an apartment. I stayed at an Extended Stay America where they let me have my cats. They treated me so well and even gave me Christmas presents because I ended up there through Christmas of 05! I ended up there for six months because I was so picky about the home I bought, but it would have been a much shorter stay had I been looking for an apartment.
Whatever you do... at least it's an option

Thanks for the tips. I have no problem filling out applications, but I would want to keep it to a minimum - I don't want to have to pay several application fees. I'll check out Residence Inn and Extended Stay; I thinking they wouldn't take pets, so that is good to know.

I manage properties here in SoCal ........... contact me 2 weeks in advance. I will not hold a property. When it's ready, you have to be ready. Another tip, don't tell "us" you only want it for short term, even tho it's a month-to-month agreement. We're not a hotel and don't appreciate short turn-overs.
