DENVER – A United Airlines jet returned safely to the Denver airport Tuesday after a bird was sucked into one of its engines shortly after takeoff.

The engine that was struck continued to operate and the second engine wasn't affected, airline spokeswoman Megan McCarthy said. A passenger said the bird hit the right engine.

I don't know what the circumstances were at Denver when this incident happened, but it's happening way too often and I wish airports would take the necessary steps to keep birds away from, and the close proximity of airports.

1) Maintain paths that are up to 2 miles beyond the runway thresholds, that are clear of vegetation and other items that would attract birds.
2) Install devices that have been available for years on those paths that generate super high frequency sounds, which are audible to most species of birds for a perimeter of up to 5 miles in all directions.

I'm glad nobody got hurt in this incident, and I'm glad the engine on this 757 was not damaged and was still operating after the bird got sucked into it.
