Decided to do something a tad different for today's happy thread.

So today: a random dollop (sp?) of wisdom.

"We are what we do repeatedly do."
-- Aristotle

Reminds me of the adage: "You are what you eat." And as much as I am annoyed by the ridiculous amount of attention paid to Aristotle in academia (his ideas, though revolutionary in their time were often dead wrong - especially when it came to science) on this occasion I believe old Ari had really come across a truth.

It has to do with habit and discipline or the lack thereof. I feel like the older I get I have become less disciplined (able or at least willing to make myself do unpleasant things like get up early, work out, etc.) and more a creature of habit.

But I guess what we can take from this is the habit becomes the discipline, which becomes what we are. If I repeatedly overeat, I'll become fat. If I get some exercise, I'll become or stay healthy.

If I believe myself to be a painter, that is not enough. I have to get the canvas and brushes and take some lessons or buy some instructional books and do it. Even if I feel like an idiot along the way. C'est la vie! Get over it.

Ps - Dollop is too a word

No bjh, Ari was wrong here also. It may work with fat and exercise but how about that choir member who can't carry a tune in a bucket. They are not a lousy vocalist because they sing badly. They are lousy because they are tone deaf. A baseball player who warms the bench is not there because he strikes out. He's there because he does not have the hand and eye co-ordination to hit a curve ball. There are no blind NASCAR drivers. You can spend your life crashing cars. It won't happen. We may "Think we are what we do repeatedly do". In reality we are what we do with what we are given.

Sorry to have p***ed on your day, studedude.

The quote is about what we do, not what we can't do.

Cheer up.

Good point.

That person in the choir is what they repeatedly do. They are a lousy singer.

The blind NASCAR driver is what he repeatedly does, a car crasher!

Trolling notwithstanding..

The point isn't about what skills we don't have. It is about how our habits form us. What I extrapolated that to was: We can have a talent, but fail to develop it. I think it is a part of the challenge of life to try to live up to our potential.
