It has the makings of a Hollywood script: A young rancher struggling to eke out a living in one of the poorest corners of the nation claims one of the biggest undivided jackpots in U.S. lottery history — $232 million — after buying the ticket in a town called Winner.
Rumors have been flying around the town of Mission for the past week as people guessed who was the big jackpot winner. Now that 23-year-old Neal Wanless has come forward to collect the money, those guesses finally have some confirmation. It's news people are happy to hear in one of the poorest counties in the nation.
As much as winning a lottery changes people (and the people around them...) I sure hope this young man is truly able to handle all that comes with having such a large amount of money. And that the folks around him aren't changed into something he can't cope with. That siad, it's a wonderful tale of someone winning who truly deserves it.
The only people who can easily squander away $232 million dollars is Michael Jackson and Mike Tyson. Most people can live off that much money for the rest of their lives.
The jackpot would have been worth the full $232 million had he selected the annuity option over a 30-year period, but he selected the cash lump-sum option, and I read earlier that it was worth about $88 million after taxes, which is still not a bad deal for a $15 investment.
