Lately, I've been wondering why businesses, e.g., restaurants, malls, stores, banks, etc., are not open 24 hours. One plausible reason why businesses close at night is because the business owners have to sleep. Another plausible reason is the economic downturn. Can anyone think of other reasons why businesses are not open 24/7?

I suspect money. Anytime they are open they have higher electric bills, employess they must pay for etc. Many businesses don't make enough money in those early morning hours to make it worth it to stay open.

There are a lot of businesses in the Chicago metro area open 24 hrs. My guess that there are not enough "night people" in your area to support a 24 hr operation.

Mainly the lack of customers at different times would be a good reason. Also some businesses are open at night and closed during the daytime, while others are just the opposite because of the type of business or services and needs of the customers. Nite Clubs are not normally opened during the day yet there are no Day Clubs. City jails are open 24/7 but Churches are opened 3/1 only a few hours one day.

It is all about money. Store clerks still need to be paid by the hour even when there is nothing to do. Paying someone to do nothing is not an economically wise decision.

I understand your pain though - went from Orlando to Hicksville and am still suffering from the culture shock. In Orlando, if I wanted a 25-pound turkey at 3am in mid July, I simply went to the nearest store and got one. In Hicksville, I am lucky to find one at 3pm in mid December - but only around Thanksgiving and Christmas and never again until the following year. It's really sad. I love turkey all year long.

The key is to know what you use all year long and to stock up on it when you can get it. I have two chest freezers and never have fewer than four 25-pound turkeys for whenever the mood strikes me to cook a Thanksgiving meal whenever I please.

Agreed...usually you'll be hardpressed in suburbia to find 24/7 open shops...the only ones would be like a diner in the northeast as far as I know. The 24/7 open places would be in more densely packed areas like major cities where staying open all night would benefit them and be profitable.

In Anchorage Safeways is open 24 hours. However you really takes your chances as usually there is only one checkout line open and there always seems to be someone with 2 overflowing carts in line ahead of me.

As soon as our wages are competitive (suppressed) in the global arena, we'll soon see much more 24-7 businesses. Better yet when bills are passed so that our children, as young as 9, are allowed to bring home the bacon like the good ole days, this will instill a puritan work ethic and also will allow 24 hour business to thrive to meet the needs of its people and its owners. Better yet, outlaw sleep, institute two 12 hour shifts. Oh, heck, just legalize slavery again.
