Fun little topic...So we're all on a level playing field, let's say you win the lottery, pay off all your debts, buy or pay off your current house, take the lump sum and after taxes you net one million dollars. Would you give any and how much to your family...In-Laws...Friends? Would you be more likely to give more to friends who are struggling or friends who you've known longer?

A lot of you know about situations with my family, so the answer on giving to them is a big, fat NO.
My best friends - love them muchly and they go back with me to elementary school, they are my family, have extended themselves more than my family has and indeed I would offer to ease burdens they have. Knowing my friends, they would not take it, however.
I would open my animal rescue/shelter that I want so badly. .
I would donate to an orphanage and to a local food bank or two.
Who knows what we'd really do? But I've always had this little fantasy of gathering all my family in one room, and handing out million-dollar checks to each of them. Then throwing a three-day party at an exotic resort for us and our friends.
Giving to friends is the best way to NOT have friends anymore. And to give to family is a bad idea. Best thing to do is 'gift' something...I'd find the pressing need...say an upcoming wedding or a niece or nephew going off to college, or a leaky roof.... but I wouldn't hand over cash.

Ahhh-ha a fun post! I have talked to the hubs a lot about what I would do if I won the lotto. I have told him that after taking care of any financial obligations we have here at home, I would give my son and his wife a portion of the winnings and then I would sit down with my best friend and clear all her debt, fix her house, pay off her mortgage and give them a little nest egg. My best friend has raised 4 children of her own and 5 of her grandchildren. One of the grandchildren just had a baby; not married; and my friend is letting this "child" live with her with HER child. She is 64 years old, still working and cannot afford to retire. Her husband is 71 and still runs a landscaping business, he also cannot retire. They still have 4 of their 5 grandchildren living at home with them because they are not of age to leave as yet and now the new baby on top of it.
Worse case scenario, the daughter who had all these grandkids just came back into the picture and has lupus and kidney failure, has been in and out of jail and is drug addicted. My friend is trying to get this 40 year old woman out of her home through legal measures and has been spending tons of money trying to do so.
So..............yes......absolutely I would give some of the money away especially to this friend. I would give her the money then make sure she paid her mortgage, fixed what needed to be fixed, found a place for her druggie daughter to live and also a place for the grandchild who just had the baby to live. Time for my friend at agre 64 to retire...her husband too!
