When I was in high school / college, occasionally I'd put my thumb out and get a ride. This never seemed to be a problem for me. This was back in the 60s and 70s when society was perhaps more lighthearted in general, and folks weren't constantly on guard so to speak. I took other people at face value and sometimes conversations were pretty interesting. Other times it was just a ride with a thank you at the end.
These days I'll still give a lift to someone. Not always, but I still do it. I've never had anything weird happen and perhaps that's why I'll still ride with a stranger. How about you? Do you pick up hitchhikers? Do you hitchhike? Has anyone here gone cross country this way?

It might depend on the situation, if they had a car that broke down and needed a ride into town that’s one thing. But if it’s just a person waiting along the road it think I’ll pass on by. Sorry
And when you see signs along the roadways that say, "DO NOT PICK UP HITCHHIKERS" it is a sure sign that your pretty darn near a prison.
I've only "hitched" a ride once w/ a complete stranger. On my way home from work in rush hour traffic on the interstate far left lane and my front tire blew. I pulled over onto the shoulder (left shoulder as there was no way I could have safely made it to the right shoulder in that mess). The guy behind me saw it happen and pulled over too. Offered me a ride to the next exit to a phone. This was the time before cell phones. I stood there and like a good girl remembered to never get in the car w/ strangers then looked at the traffic and knew I could fend of him a lot easier than I could all those cars and trucks trying to cross the highway. I got ahold of my parents (in college at the time) and the guy stayed there and waited to make sure I was safe till they got there. He was a dad of girls.
Hitchhiking was such fun in the 70s. Never went cross-country, but hitched from Ft. Laud. to Miami a number of times. Too bad it's so unsafe now. It was a fun part of my teen years.
Picked up hitchikers, too, back then. Met many neat guys from the northeast that way. Then I'd go up there and visit them later. Some from Canada.. thanks for the thread, brought back good memories!
No, No, NO ! When I was in High school in the 70's this friend of mine, cute blond guy was hitch hiking home from the beach (Htn.Bch.,CA) and was picked up by the Freeway Strangler a serial killer, it was awful. I still can't believe it.
Oh I am so glad you've got a lot of sense in your nugget!
A girl I was at school with got raped while hitching a lift.
