I heard it pronounced both ways, but I always go with coo-pon. Maybe because coupon is a French word, I guess I tend to pronounce it closest to its original pronunciation!
Native New Yorker here, it's coo-pon. Bag does not rhyme with vague. Don and Dawn are pronounced differently. When I ask for a pen, you'll know I don't want a pin.
Years ago, I always said coo-pon. I began to notice that others said cue-pon! I thought they were wrong. So I looked it up. The dictionary said the correct way was cue-pon! So I switched to saying cue-pon! Now it's second nature to say cue-pon, but my husband says coo-pon and it bugs me now.
I am headed over right now to see what dictionary.com says about it! Will post!
Ok, dictionary.com had a little info about the pronunciation controversy. It can be either is the gist of it. Sounds like the coo was probably the original way, however. So, I guess, it's all good and I can quit being bugged at my husband about the way he says it!
Route as in clout.... "but please take route (root) 80".
And it's sauce, not gravy!!
When I add flour and milk to pan drippings and pour it over turkey or potatoes, I'm making sauce?
