I think the poster was referring to tomato sauce being called gravy.

My Dad insisted on catsup, the rest of us say ketchup. He is (was) the only person I know who does (did) that.

Donno why...just is.
I do the same thing, and I even have Root 66 bisecting my town. Oddly enough, there's a mountain pass dividing L.A. County from Kern County called the "Ridge Route." Everyone pronounces that route as in clout, but in the same breath we'll say Root 66.

I believe it has something to do with vestigial influence from the popularity of the Bobby Troup song Route 66, as well as the popular TV series of the same name that ran from 1960 to '64.

I'm gonna need some time to Ketchup with everybody on this topic..

We have a city in the State of Arizona that's pronounced 2 different ways - Prescott, Arizona's mile-high city, is about 75 miles northwest of Phoenix, and some pronounce it as it appears - Prehs-kott, but most Arizonans, like myself, pronounce it the way it was originally pronounced - Prehs-kett.

The proper pronunciation is COO-pon. It comes from the French "couper", meaning "to cut", and "ou" in French is always pronounced "OO" while "U" is pronounced "yoo".

So, if it were spelled "cupon", then indeed it would be "CYOO-pon"; but any word with French origin with "ou" gets the unpalatized (fancy linguistic word for no "y" sound") "OO" sound.

Now how about these--since Thanksgiving is coming up:

Is the sweet gooey stuff you put on a cake "frosting" or "icing"?
Is the bread mixture you put inside a turkey "dressing" or "stuffing"?
