This is horribly sad to me. I have been homeless myself multiple times in the past. I would have done the same as this man, but I am disgusted how he was treated by passerby's.
I have called the police twice on a homeless guy & a homeless girl that I have seen sleeping on the sidewalk, & the key is to stay until the police or an ambulance comes, for exactly this reason.
Stories like this one are so sad. I remember the Kitty Genovese incident when it happened. To this day her name is used to describe incidents like this. Is it a New York thing? I mean, the eyes-front-mind-your-own-business-don't-get-involved mind set? Seems like it is always New York where things like this happen--or at least the ones that make the news service.
I wasn't trying to impugn New Yorkers......there are indifferent people everywhere and it seems to be more a "big city" thing.....it's just that it seems to be the New York incidents that make the national news.
an american paradox, we punish involvement on a regular basis.
we are progammed to "mind our own business" by repeated penal and civil legal action.
moral acfions by citizens are seen as subversive and a threat to those in charge from K12 thru retirement. an old man on the sidwalk is a law suit waiting to happen.
Had someone had the balls to dial 9-1-1 and stay with the man, he may not only still be alive today, but the one who stabbed him could have been caught by now.
