I am thinking about moving to Ottawa when I finish school in a few years. My main goal is to someday live in Montreal, but since I live in southern Ontario the options to speak french is not great. I am using the Rosetta Stone software to try and learn French, but am wondering if it makes sense to move to Ottawa where there is more french...but not necessarily a requirement, in order to get to near fluency through exposure, and then make the switch to Montreal?

You could do that, but Ottawa's still pretty English and you might not learn too well. I'd recommend working in Ottawa, but living in Gatineau, which is actually cheaper because lots of people who move to the Ottawa area don't want to move to the Quebec side because they have no knowledge of French, so there's a built in discount as result. Or you could get an English job at one of the many federal agencies in Gatineau. If you do that, you'll also get the free French classes that the Quebec government offers to teach immigrants and anglophones the language.

They also offer some great online French learning materials for free:

Not a bad idea though Ottawa does not offer anything close to a decent level of French immersion. That said if you land a government job they *might* pay for your French courses for you. Of course there is the risk that you end up liking Ottawa so much that you never move on to Montreal.

Hi,

I'm curious about the;

Quote from BIMBAM "get an English job at one of the many federal agencies in Gatineau".

Do you mean that there are English only jobs in Gatineau or do you have to be bilingual. What other places on the Quebec side have English only jobs.

Also, where are the best places to apply for getting work in Gatineau or Ottawa in English only. This was new for me as I thought it was all French.

Just a note. I drove to Aylmer 2 weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. I had preconceived notions that it was poorly maintained roads and looked like farm land with unruly side streets and old houses. We should never manifest an opinion of a place until we see it. There are beautiful new developments and some lovely roads to drive on that have thruways into Gatineau. Apologies for my negative thinking.

Looking forward to feedback.

johmac

The federal Government of Canada is a major employer in Ottawa and Gatineau. Many of its jobs require bilingualism but quite a few jobs requires English only or at least minimal French. A small number of Government of Canada jobs require French only.

In Ottawa-Gatineau the federal government does not distribute its English only jobs only in Ottawa. Its departments are spread out between the cities according to real estate portfolio management requirements, not the language requirements of positions.

The Department of Aboriginal Affairs is in Gatineau and has lots of English only jobs. The Commissiariat of Official Language is in Ottawa and everyone who works there is bilingual.

Aside from the federal government, English-only jobs in Gatineau would be relatively rare, and mostly be associated with the school system in Gatineau which serves the city's English-speaking minority. If you are going to be working with the public in any capacity in Gatineau it is basically essential to speak French.

The vast majority of jobs in Gatineau require either French only or bilingualism.

And the vast majority of non-government jobs in Ottawa require English only. Most of the private secotr (hi-tech, local services, etc.) operate in English. If you are bilingual it is a good asset to have but it is not an essential requirement for most jobs.
