Hello all,
I'm moving to the area in March 2014 for work. I'll be working just West of Renfrew, but I like the big city so I'm thinking of living in Ottawa or Kanata. I know I'd be looking at an hour commute...my only concern is the winter weather. Is the highway kept clear, even very early in the morning? Are there many blinding whiteout snow storms up there? Anyone else tried this commute?

Thanks!

Highways 417 and 17 between Ottawa and Renfrew would be top priority for snow clearing so they would almost never be "impracticable" (sorry if this is not the right word). Of course, there will be periods where you will driving in snow but the crews go out proactively and quickly so almost never deep enough so that you can't drive the highway, although you may have to go slower of course.

If you tell us where you are coming from I can give you a better idea of what the winter conditions would be like there.

I'm coming from Sarnia.

I visited Ottawa and Arnprior this weekend. I really like the Kanata and Ottawa area.

OK. Well, it will be consistently snowier than what you're used to but you've seen plenty of snowstorms and whiteouts and such on the highways before so it shouldn't be too much of a problem for you.

The highway from Kanata to Arnprior is good and is generally in forests so whiteouts and drifting are not a huge problem in the winter. From Arnprior to Renfrew is two lanes and has a few more open stretches as I recall but it is still a Trans-Canada route so a priority for plowing.

I highly doubt there'll be many days in the winter where the snow will cause you many problems getting to and from work.

Especially if you reverse commute from Kanata or Stittsville or the western part of Ottawa.
