Hi
I was wondering if I could get some advise on living in Canada and commuting to New York to work.

I am a Canadian permanent resident and a US citizen living in Ottawa. I would like to work in the US but I am not sure of legalities and immigration issues. I would also like any info on tax implications.

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Sophia

That's a very ambitious commute.

Flying is the quickest way, but seems to be rather pricy at about $400/roundtrip via Air Canada.

A combination of VIA Rail and Amtrak is cheaper at roughly $250, but the 14 hour trip time seems a little onerous.

Driving might be an adventure at times.

As far as the immigration issues go, if you have PR status in Canada, you're free to come and go as you wish. There shouldn't be any issues.

On the tax side of things, rather than take the advice doled out by well-intentioned but non-expert forum denizens, why not visit the Canada Revenue Agency site at

www.cra-arc.gc.com (broken link) ?

You could also call the CRA's International Tax Office at 1-800-267-5177 or
613-952-3741 and get specific answers to specific questions directly from the official source.

Default Thanks

Thanks for the info!
Actually I would be commuting just over the border so it is only an hour drive.

Would it be on that enterprise zone on the NY side of the Ogdensburg bridge....that is about 50 minutes from my place in Kanata.

Sorry, for some reason I assumed New York City.......duh.

You shouldn't have any border-crossing issues as you have the legal right to enter both countries.
