Hi,
I’m in the process of planning a trip for my wife and 2 of her friends to Ottawa from July 18-23. One of her friend’s sons will be playing baseball for the Ottawa Champions this summer. They will be staying at the Marriott Residence Inn on Laurier Ave. Is this a central location to see some of the downtown museums etc?

What’s the best way getting around? Public transit (bus, subway), taxi, uber? Is the downtown area walkable and safe?

From airport to hotel?
From hotel to RCGT Park?
Must see things? Best restaurants?
How’s the weather in July?
Any recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Mike

Hey, Mike! You're a good husband.

Is this a central location to see some of the downtown museums etc? Yes.
What’s the best way getting around? For some people -- public transport. For me -- I'd take Uber.
Is the downtown area walkable and safe? Yes.
How’s the weather in July? Hot. And humid. ETA: Oh. You're in Louisiana? Then they will be cold. Forecast for July.
Best restaurants?
- Do they like Thai? This place is close to their hotel and is great: Lemon Grass
- This is a fabulous funky lunch place: Art Is In Bakery I recommend the spicy fried dill pickle sandwich. Seriously! Menu. (There will be a long line, but it moves quickly. They've got a system! )
Must see things? ByWard Market

Have fun! You've got six days of uninterrupted pizza, beer, sports, etc.!

It's actually quite humid in the summer in Ottawa, so it terms of feel most days are actually in the upper 80s to the mid 90s F at least. Sometimes into the mid-90s and close to 100F in feel even.

Still "cooler" than Louisiana though.

Additional things to see:

Parliament buildings - Canada's equivalent to the U.S. Capitol*

Sound and light show in the evening on the Parliament buildings*

Changing of the guard on the lawn of the Parliament at 10 am*

National Gallery of Canada - our national art museum*

Canadian Museum of History - arguably the best museum in the country, just across the river in Gatineau, Québec*

Rideau Hall - residence of Canada's Governor-General (not that far but a bit of hike from the main downtown core - maybe 30 minutes if you walk fast - it's a nice walk; there are also buses that go there)

Canadian War Museum*

Casino du Lac Leamy - if you want to gamble, and even if you don't, it's a nice place to go out for drinks and food; across the river in Gatineau, Québec; it's about 15 minutes by direct bus from downtown Ottawa - and the buses are clean and safe; or a short cab ride)

*Stuff that is within reasonable walking distance from the hotel, and can be done in a kind of circuit if you plan it.

If you're from Louisiana, then Ottawa should be afraid of you. Very safe in comparison to US cities.

You will be close to most, but not all, museums. War, History (just across the river), Nature, National Gallery are all downtown core and pretty much walk-able from Laurier Ave. Aviation and Science/Tech museums are east end, but not too far.

If you go to the Quebec side (which is awesome) to see the Museum of History, there is an amazing AYCE Thai restaurant Maison Samorn. Bit of a hidden gem and the building does not look fancy. Just walk 5 very short blocks down Victoria (from the Museum) and your taste buds will be thankful.

It is not a big deal.
It is just as complicated as dropping someone off at Disney World. Ottawa is very safe.
Strange to note that compared to Toronto it seems people dress more casual at night venues.

Might be wise for her and her friends to put some effort in to actually figuring out what they want to do vs being suggested things from you unless it is a surprise gift from you.

For example if I was going for a weekend trip with my girl friends that last person I would want advise from was my husband lol.

Sweet idea... but after booking the hotel and flight ... might let them figure out the rest as I can't see how 3 adult women should need someone to tell them what they want to do for a girls weekend.

Just forward this website to them.

There are also hop on and hop off city tour buses. That basically shuttle you from attraction to attraction.
