Hi all--

When this Covid crap is over, I'm considering a move to the Ottawa area from Edmonton, and am trying to narrow down some of the least flood-prone areas.

I see the areas to the west, northwest, and southwest like Carleton Place, Mississippi Mills, Smiths Falls, Arnprior have all experienced lots of really recent disastrous floods, and I'd like to avoid that if at all possible.

An acquaintance in the area is suggesting places like Barrhaven, Kanata, and Orleans (on the "up" side of 174). The prices there tend to be a little higher though. I'd be interested in a small house or a townhouse with a garage and a small backyard (I love to garden, even if it's a small one).

It doesn't have to be within the greenbelt necessarily. My company is looking at opening a branch in the area, so a lot will depend on where they open and what my commute would look like. I've seen some really cute older homes in the outlying areas that I'd love to re-do, but when I look up the towns, they've all had major flooding within the last 2-3 years.

Can anyone help?

it really depends on where your employer relocates to, only real risk to flooding in my opinion is withing a km of a major river, namely the Ottawa river. I dont think properties more than a km away have been effected

i live in Orleans (up the hill) but i know the area down by the river quite well, i dont think any houses down there have been touched by the last two serious floods

Gatineau was hit quite bad, again only really close to the river, also more rural areas west of the city like Constance bay

Yeah, none of the main Ottawa suburbs just outside the Greenbelt (Orleans, Kanata, Barrhaven) have issues with flooding.

There are sometimes issues in Cumberland just east of Orleans though.

Ottawa inside the Greenbelt does not have flooding issues either.

If you look at a topographical map, generally the river shoreline is quite a bit higher on the Ottawa side than it is on the Gatineau side. Even at locations right across from each other.

Especially Pointe Gatineau, very low land
