My family and I are planning on moving to the Ottawa area and would appreciate any advice on where to live. We have 3 school age children and I will be working in downtown Ottawa. I understand the traffic can be bad on the 417. Any information on neighbourhoods, commuting, recreation programs or anything else we should know would be helpful.

Thx

Hi there,
Congrats on your move to Ottawa. The traffic on the 417/Queensway can be a real pain as I did it for several years. I lived in the West End of Ottawa most of my life. I know Ottawa like the back of my hand and I can say the west end is great. Little bit of everything you will need, shopping, sports, nature etc etc. The communte from the west end to downtown in the morning will run you about 45-1hr.
I find most of the really nice family areas are about the same distance away from the core of Ottawa. Kanata is a fantastic community with so much to offer a family (we have 4 kids ourselves). Barrhaven is another nice community but I find it to be a bit to far to access the 417 for my taste.
So I would say look at Kanata in the west end or you can check out orleans on the east end. I think most communters of the 417 from either end of the city look at a good 45 minute drive and although it sucks you just do it and get kinda immune to it.

All the best for this new chapter in your life!
Haley

There is a pretty good thread on this very topic from a few weeks ago that you can find here:

//www.city-data.com/forum/canad...fe-ottawa.html

Traffic on the 417 is quite bad however note that all areas of Ottawa (including suburbs like Orleans, Kanata and Barrhaven and even some areas beyond) have really good express bus service to downtown if that’s where you are going to be working.

Not sure if your morning routine with three school-aged kids would allow for daily bus commuting but it is worth looking into if you are even remotely able to swing it.

In actual time most days of the year it is faster to take the bus than to drive in from the suburbs to downtown Ottawa.

We are also moving to Ottawa. We are looking for a good French Immersion High school (grade 9). Any recommendations? It can be public or Catholic. We are trying to locate a great school in a nice-newer type neighbourhood where our child can easily make friends and feel comfortable at school.

Question Looking to move to Ottawa in a nice and safe neighbourhood

Me and my 29 years old daughter are planning to move to Ottawa, right now we are living in Halifax NS. But she graduated from St. Mary's university, psychology for more than 2 years and she can't find a job. We are thinking to rent an appartment and we are looking for a nice and safe . We are looking for 1 bedroom and a den, we can pay up-to $1100. Anybody can help us with information??
Thanks
