My wife and I are planning a trip to Ottawa to visit her sister in a few weeks. I am in need of suggestions for: places to eat, bars, dance placesa and cool places to check out?
Take a tour of the parliament building.....very, very interesting! Plus a nice view from the top of the tower. The Byward Market is a nice place to visit as well.
I used to work in Parliament - it's definately worth seeing, and free!
I suggest diing at the best Italian restaurant in the city, called "Mamma Theresa's" just a few blocks from Parliament. I think it's on Somerset Street.
The Canadian Museum of Civilization is in Gatineau, right across the river, and is free one day a week (I forget which day - call ahead).
The Museum of Currency is free, and is downtown.
You could spend years checking out all the restaurants and bars in the Byward Market. I'm not a drinker, so I tended to go early for some fish & chips and leave. Wonderful food, though.
The Parliament is only interesting if you have an interest in Canadian politics, architecture, and Canadian history. In fact, most of Ottawa's really interesting if you have an interest in Canadian history.
The National Gallery of Canada, the Museum of Civilization, the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Aviation Museum are all fantastic.
