I haven't the time to devote to a garden (a jar of scallions on the windowsill is about all I can handle), but my tradition is to start fermenting my annual batch of sauerkraut fermenting. Nothing fancy, just sticking a quart-size jar of 'kraut in the back of the refrigerator, but it's a nice reminder that summer cookouts are on their way.
I have never tried making my own, but I have gained a fondness for sauerkraut in my old age. My sister makes her own.
I found this wonderful small company up here in Ontario called Pyramid Ferments. Their garlic and dill sauerkraut is simply divine.
She must have good fences to prevent the animals from eating everything. I've been wiped out by groundhogs some years in suburban New Jersey. Years ago, a friend who lived in Medford lost everything to rabbits three years in a row and stopped planting.
I'll be starting Zinnia seeds soon. I never see the plants for sale. While not a favorite, both humming birds and butterflies are attracted to them.

I would love hang out with your sister.
She does have the whole garden fenced in. Lots of woods, so lots of critters where she is. I hope to get some sunflowers going. I love them, and it's been a couple of years since I had any.
