My little girl is only 3 1/2 and I think she's too young to stop napping but we've started having trouble getting her to sleep on time in the evening. On the days she doesn't nap and just ends up taking quiet time in her bed, she then goes to sleep easier, and around her bedtime time (8:30pm), in the evening.
My child naps for about 1 1/2 hrs the two days she goes to daycare and anywhere from 1-2 hours at home most days.
My friend's son stopped napping completely around 3 yrs old but I don't personally think that's the norm... (but I could be wrong).
Around 3. I always would rather they go to bed on time than have that couple hours during the day. If you find that she is falling asleep at the dinner table, keep her nap a while longer.
My first 2 didn't stop until kindergarten and the third one stopped around age 4, my youngest 2 1/2 still takes one.
All three kids could have went without taking a nap by 3yo on most days but anytime we went somewhere after 5pm (which was nearly everyday) they would fall asleep in the car and then be cranky when we got to where we were going. So it was better for everyone if they continued their nap until they were a little older.
My son stopped just before his 3rd birthday. He still occasionally nods off early evening if we are on a long car ride, but that's it. My almost 2 year old still naps generally for almost 2 hours in the early afternoon, but she has been gradually going less and less time and sometimes only naps for 30 minutes or so. We still think that she needs her naps as she actually sleeps better at night when she has taken a nap, but she seems to be determined to end the naps on her terms.
My first one stopped right around 4 and my second one just turned 4 in April, she's pretty much on the fence,(somedays she does, and then she's up late at night) and then when she doesn't she's exhausted at bedtime and cranky..but she's holding on pretty well.
I'd be shocked if she's still napping in a month.
I agree it all depends on the child. I knew it was time to stops the naps when it took longer to get my son to fall asleep for the nap then the time he actually napped.
I think it was harder on me as I liked that time during the day when he was asleep!
Then they become teenagers and you can never get them up
mine stopped around 4. For everyone I've talked to about it, there seems to always be a rough transition where they don't want to sleep in the afternoon, but they get cranky in the evening if they don't. And if they do nap in the afternoon, they won't go to bed at night. Around 4 1/2, I started letting mine watch a movie for "quiet time" in the afternoon. Sometimes they'd sleep, sometimes not.
Thanks everyone... my girl holds up pretty well until bedtime when she doesn't take a nap and doesn't get overly tired or cranky before bedtime. I too enjoy napping when she naps so I'm not looking forward to her not napping anymore. But it sounds like she's kind of on schedule with some of your children in that she's phasing out of her naps, and might be out completely around 4 (if I can keep her going until then).
