I am the parent of a heavy 11 year old boy. He is 4'11' tall and currently 112 lb (down from 117). He does not eat ANY junk food NONE. AT. ALL. He loves oatmeal, raisins, pasta...all real food but to many calories will pack on the pounds regardless of whether the food is healthy.
I get really tired of these threads where people assume that just because a child is heavy that his parents feed the child a steady diet of Doritos and ice cream. One of my kids is 5'9", 120 lb. He eats WAY MORE than his chubbier brother and he exercises way less also.

I agree with you, and it sounds as if your child is eating well-balanced diet.
As I have struggled with my own weight, one thing that has become apparent to me is how much two people can vary in their cravings and metabolism. It's taken me years to fine-tune my diet. I finally discovered that I needed to stop eating sugar and heavily-processed carbs completely, because even small portions are problematic. I eat only whole grains now, mostly bulgur, quinoa, and oats. I eat very little bread, even the healthy whole grain types. Whole wheat pasta is a once-a-week thing and only 1/2 cup at a time as a side with a small portion of lean protein, mostly beans rather than meat, and a ton of veggies. I eat few things that come packaged. I also removed caffeine, because it was interrupting my sleep, which led me to carb-load for energy the next day. There was absolutely no stopping me when presented with a basket of tortilla chips. No wine either, as it impairs my self-control.
These changes haven't been easy, and I still have strong cravings for sweets, but they're easing, and my weight is dropping slowly. As I noted earlier, my brother is stick-thin and eats like crap. He must take after somebody else in the family.
