Our son is 20 months old and when he started climbing the side of his crib we took the side off to make it a toddler bed. Well that didn't work at all he just refused to stay in bed.So we put the side back on and then he figured out to step onto the dressers that were near him and get down so moved the dressers back farther well now he is finding some other way out and even though he is tired he gets out and I can't figure out how but it has to be over the top of the crib so what can we do to stop him? Also it seems lately he doesn't want to eat and even though he is sleepy he just wants to play all day long. Its weird to me because he usually doesn't do this.

At least go back to the toddler bed while you're trying to figure it out. I'm 32 and still have scars on my forehead from falling out of my crib as a baby.

My mom used to pin the toes of our pjs together so we couldn't get a leg up and over to get out. My husband's father had to fashion a top for the crib that they secured so he couldn't get out. (I know, but it was a long time ago and it did work with no adverse effects.)

I would go for the toddler bed. put some cartoon colorful sheets on the bed. make his room inviting for him. make a new bed time routine. time enough before bed to wind down, a bath, read a story, maybe turn on some soothing music and a night light. get him a mini jungle gym or some kind of climbing thing for day time fun.

we used a crib tent. 2 years old is about the normal time to move them to a regular bed or toddler bed anyway, so I don't know if a crib tent would be worthwhile. Until he gets used to being in a bed, you'll have to keep putting him back over and over. We used to take turns sitting outside the room and sending ours back to bed. Eventually they get used to it.

You could try a crib tent (something I haven't tried) or a sleep sack. A sleep sack is similar to pinning the toes of PJs together but probably safer.

I used a reward system to keep my DS in a toddler bed but he was about 27 months when he climbed out of the crib and went to the toddler bed. 20 months may be too young for rewards to work. Personally I would try to keep him in the crib.

We used the crib tent, they sell them at babies r us, or toys r us.

My ds is a quick learner, her wiggled his little hand under the tent zipper and quickly learned how to open it. We figured out he was opening the tent, crawling out, messing around in the room, then would crawl back inside the tent and zip it back up!

If you have a kid determined to crawl out of bed, there's no telling what he might do. We had an alarm on the doors and windows, also had it set for his bedroom door. It would chime if he opened the door. A worthwhile investment!

Maybe I'm missing something...why not just put him in a toddler or regular bed and take the time to teach him to stay in bed? Like rkb said, you most likely will have to take him back to bed for a while (sometimes quite some time) but he'll learn.
