There was a thread recently asking how parents feel about their cute little kids growing into pre-teens/teens who didn't want to walk with you at the mall.
Well, earlier today, casual business meeting over coffee, there was a small boy sitting nearby who had obviously just learned the word "no". Because he sat there for quite some time informing anyone who would listen "no no no no no NO NO no no NO no nO NO no no No". He also had one of those magical tables which is off-balanced for no apparent reason so it was accompanied by a rattling noise.
Then as we left there was another small boy outside who had the grumpiest face on and as we walked past he turned and gave the store's street-sign a great big kick.
And I kind of smiled to myself and thought "my kids are awesome (now)".

And the parent(s) did what in response to the sign getting the kick in the shins? Curious. (I'd love to know what set the kid off. First guess was he was just told he couldn't do something.)

Option #1: Clearly, the sign should have defended itself and kicked back.
Option #2: Clearly, we now need anti-bullying laws to extend to street signs, and the child needs anger-management classes, therapy, and medication.
I'm not sure what happened before or after. But the little guy had that fed up look, that 'life is not going how I planned' look. And it wasn't even 9 yet.

It's probably safe to say we ALL know that look. Yikes! When they have it before 9 in the morning you know it's going to be a long day.
i havent met one kid who doesnt do this from time to time. as a parent i dont even bat an eye anymore. i know how the parent feels--and i let them know it. we are all in it together. all tha parent needs is a bit of understanding and someone to tell them they are not alone. i have gotten looks from people who dont have kids or have adult kids and have forgotten what their children were like and turn up their noses. i just smile. i dont care. i know my son and how wonderful he is. if he is having a difficlut moment it's because he needs or wants my attention--and NO ONE has the right to say anything about it.
trust me, i have had people say things or give me looks...i just dont say anything---but the next time they are faced with such a problem from their own child, grandchild, or neice/nephew, i just give them a BIG smile.
