So my grandmother bought me a car.
I haven't really filled you guys in on this yet so here it is.

She sold about $17,000 in bonds to buy my car. A brand new 2010 Kia Forte EX. I pay her back each month.

I want to fly out on my vacation, surprise her, and hand her the first months payment in person.

Once I get in, I'll call her and be like you're gift is waiting for you at the Starbucks by your house and I'll tell her to hurry up before her gift gets cold, she'll think it's something from Starbucks so she won't figure it out and then I'll be standing there waiting for her.

Thing is anytime I have flown out, I have always consulted with her first and I don't know if it's a good idea or whatever or if I should wait till January and stuff.

Your ideas and thoughts?

Flying at the last minute and during the holidays? $$$

Wait until prices drop, mid Jan/Feb.

And let her know ahead of time that you're planning to visit. She may actually have plans. Even people who aren't twenty something have lives.

You're tellin' me. My grandma and my mom have more active social lives than me! My grandma and her bf are out on the town all the time. They also take bus trips to casinos.

Here I am a little 24 year old single girl!

She might prefer you spend that money on paying her a little extra back.

I think if she's the kind of person who typically is around her house and not a whole lot going on..DO IT! I'm sure she will be happily surprised to see you. It won't hurt that you have her monthly payment right on hand!!!

She never does.
She and my 92 year old grandmother never go out, their extent of leaving the house is going to the grocery store. They both can't walk for long periods of time and both get tired easily.
Plus since she is spending so much money to pay my mom's bills, she doesn't have money to go out herself.

That's what I might have to do because I need to rent a car as well, at least for the first day and a half so I can get to the starbucks and after we say hi and everything drop the rental car off the next morning.

I think if you can afford to travel by air and rent a car, you can afford to give her a whole lot more than whatever you're giving her to pay her back. And put the check in a card with a blank inside, which you use to hand-write your thanks for her generosity and sacrifice on your behalf. Cashing in bonds for a granddaughter is no small gesture.
