Hopes, most I've known have apprenticed, which means they picked it up as they went along. (These are all older folks.)And, being in L.A., most have had connections. So and so knows so and so. Give me time to ask a few people I know what they did. I'm sure FinsterRufus can be of help when she's back on line.

I know there are technical colleges and some colleges in So Cal have programs. Let me do a little digging when I've got some time. Today's football and tonight's Golden Globes. (My idea of a perfect day and evening of entertainment in front of the tube.)

She'll have to move to another city and live in a dorm at colllege. I guess the best school for her would be one that's located in a city that has a music industry so she can work part-time while attending school. That's what I want to know. Which schools offer the best opportunities for students who didn't grow up with connections? Which schools are the best that are located near studios? And honestly, she'd be happy being a sound technician---touring with bands too. She just wants to be affiliated with the music industry because she loves music. She's not a groupie person. She just loves music. She'd be a stage hand if she could.
She sounds just like me at her age. That's how I did it, I did front of house (live mixing) for bands first, then I got a job as an assistant engineer in a studio after making coffee and cleaning up at night for free - they gave me a job after one of their assistants quit, and I went from there.

However, unfortunately, it doesn't really work that way anymore and you do have to do an audio engineering course first. You do that and then get a job as an unpaid intern (runner) at a studio. You'll work long hours and spend many days running to restaurants at 4 in the morning picking up food for P. Diddy. But that's what it takes to get in these days.

All major recording studios have internship programs.

Here's a list of websites of engineering schools that will be taken seriously by studios:

Full Sail University: Campus and Online Degrees

The Los Angeles Recording School: School for Music Production

Recording Institute, School of Audio Engineering for Sound Engineering Courses

Creative Media Courses for Learning Audio, Video, Film, Games, Animation - SAE Institute

Here's my advice: The industry is extremely crowded with recent engineer graduates when in reality the studio business is getting smaller and smaller due to the number of people who choose home production over studio production. She needs to get herself a mac laptop and a cheap mic and a usb keyboard and start fooling around with production software - garage band, logic, or pro tools le, pronto to get a head start. She needs to subscribe to and voraciously read every industry publication out there. The main ones are:

Mix Magazine | Pro Audio, Live Sound, Music Recording and Live Post for Audio Pros

Tape Op Magazine

Speakers, Amps, Monitors & Tracking News in the Studio & Home Recording Industry - EQmag.com

KeyboardMag.com Online Community for Keys, Boards, Gear, Lessons, News, Video, Tabs & Chords

She needs to get this book:

Amazon.com: The Recording Studio Handbook (9780914130017): John M Woram: Books

There is one key and one only to being successful in this industry - and that is PERSISTENCE. You have to stick at it. You have to be extremely thick skinned and not take no for an answer. You have to work unbelievably hard. There is tons and tons of competition. This is not a job - it's a way of life.

Lastly, if she needs a mentor, I would be happy to do it. If you like Hopes, send me a DM and I'll send you my email address and my bio and discography so she can see where I've come from. I'd be happy to help.

The hubby and I spent part of today outside working our backyard garden. Planting season comes pretty early here, so we need to get it ready. It was hot, though. Man, it's over 80 degrees here. What happened to January? Of course, while I was working out there, the hubby was sitting in the trees eating from our tangerine tree.

Even when I'm old, I wouldn't be able to go to your nursing home or whatever you guys want to call it. I dress frumpy. Haha.

But you are forgetting txt that you have other things to pay for besides groceries. Cleaning supplies, toilet paper, ect etc etc. What about spend money....do you ever plan to go out once a week? I think it's going to be more realistic that you save around 200 a month then 500.
I'm not just paying liability. I have full coverage.

Yeah she's got the bare-bones "your insurance won't cover the cost of the car you just totalled, I'll have to sue you for your next 2 year's income and your firstborn" coverage.

Most people have 50k/100k liability. Her insurance wouldn't have covered my medical bills back in 1982 when I was the victim of a car accident.

That's why you see early 20 something driving cars out of their price range while living at home & 40 somethings driving Kias
I wonder if she has medical insurance. All she needs is one bad accident (god forbid that ever happen in all seriousness!!) & end up in admitted for 24hrs....
txtgrl...don't get so defensive; seriously, you gotta know what could happen if something did happen & truly would never want something bad to happen, but you could be in serious financial state if not w/ the right coverage. If you don't have any medical on top of that, at least start a small emergency savings acct, even if that means $10 a paycheck, to cover you in case of emergency. Replacing one tire can cost $100. Doctors visits noninsured are at least $80-$100.
