Cool. Because your child likes them. Encourage your child to march to the beat of his own drum. Its a good thing.

I know an 11 year old with light up shoes, and they are considered "cool" among her classmates!

Just tell him that if they make them in his size, then they are meant to be cool for his size.....:-)

Sorry, but I'm going to be Debbie-downer here. My 2nd grader chose some of the light-up Skechers and the other kids did call them baby shoes. She wore them a few more times, but now I notice they are seldom worn.

I wish they made light up sneaks when I was 8...
I had to add to this as a thought just crossed my mind...
I was in a store the other day..K-mart I think and you know those sneakers with the wheels built into the heels..?
Well I seen an adult male, lower 20's wearing a pair of them skating around the store...
I was not even aware they would make them in larger sizes.. either that or he had very small feet.. I didnt look
SO as far as an 8yo goes wearing light up shoes.. just ask that guy...

Well, he wore them today...so we'll see in a few hours how it went.

Some kids will pick on something no matter what it is...out of jealousy or spite or to position themselves? So... I have my fingers crossed.

Yes they will calgirl! You are correct! My son is 8 and in 3rd grade...and he's very small compared to the other kids. He gets teased about it all the time but he doesn't seem to give it much thought...A couple of years ago my sister in law bought my husband and son "Big Guy" and "Little Guy" sweatshirts. Until now, the sweatshirt was huge on my son. My son wears this sweatshirt all the time..its his favorite, and even though we talked about how it could trigger him being picked on he wears it anyway. He told me he doesn't care what the other kids say because the kids who are mean like that usually don't get good grades, so they are just not so smart and so he doesnt care what they think, LOL. Kids work all this stuff out on their own (most of the time, anyway). We just help by giving them them the seeds to plant in the their little minds. With that being said - I have also had to get involved in bullying situations when my daughter was his age, so I understand the flip side too.

My son is 6 and in Kindergarten and really wanted those shoes. He wore them a lot and then moved onto another pair. I've seen older kids at the ball field and his school wearing the light up ones, so I guess they are at least somewhat cool. Only thing I would caution is that they seemed to wear out pretty fast. We like Sketchers in our family, but they don't seem to hold up very well. FWIW he has a pair of lace up Nike's that he wore for various sports as well as casual use on the playground and bike rides. Those shoes still are as good as the day we got them, albeit dirty, while the Sketchers that were only worn to school are falling apart after 4 months.

At our school it's not the shoes that light-up that are really popular - it's the ones that you can pop wheels into that turn into skates: http://www.heelys.com/

All the kids want these! The kids take them out on the skatepark. Lots of fun!
