When my oldest was about a year old I was "picking" at a "brown spot" on his scalp - to see what it was, thought he had food stuck in his hair, and got a nice clump of hair in my fingers for my effort. Bagged it, brought him to the pediatrician (because the skin and the follicles were still attached) and was told he had eczema.

Strangest thing I've ever seen and have never had a repeat experience.

I did switch shampoo to Aveeno and used a light conditioner after. He grew out of it.

I am NOT saying this is your granddaughter's issue.

hhhhmmm... maybe that's what my son had. He didn't have eczema anywhere else, though.

I would massage baby oil into my sons' scalps and then comb their hair, LIGHTLY dragging the comb across the scalp to lift the stuff away.

Yep, MissFR had it too. It looked like she had a leopard print head. It all came off, when she was around 18 months. It just eventually lifts off and combs out.
