Slowing down is NOT always a bad thing. One of the things that having two grandchildren with autism has taught me is that slowing down and actually being in the present moment is important and it can be very pleasant. Why the rush to get groceries and get out. Why not use the time to teach kids to shop including teaching them how to weigh produce and how to look at prices, etc. I understand that parents are often rushing around, but that isn't always the healthiest alternative. There is enough stress and rushing when you are working, why not slow down when you are at home?

That is a fantastic idea & most OLDER toddlers & children do just fine.

A cranky 7 month old doesn't want get it. And when tagging along a 5yo & 3yo w/ a cranky 7mo, "weighing produce", doing division, & singing "Old McDonald" as we smile so heavenly isn't always the scenario. The 7mo is in a carseat. The 3yo is in the cart & annoyed he can't be walking around like his older brother. And the 5yo stops every 3 feet. Only so much slowing down I can do that is realistic & fair to my children. They can learn discipline, rules, and patience in other ways, also!

Kids don't need tv while grocery shopping. They just don't need it. Not going to scar them for life though if that is a parents choice.

And not taking your kids shopping w/ you so you can have maybe an hour or two of peace...makes for a much happier mama. It's literally the only away time I get right now & I don't need to feel guilty that my 5yo doesn't know Spanish from the Latino section of the grocery store b/c I left him home to hang out w/ daddy.

Rushing around isn't the healthiest. Neither is feeling overwhelmed 24/7 as a parent. Sure is nice when parents can work out a system where THEY are a priority for a few hrs every once in awhile.

My kids love me going grocery shopping b/c that means time w/ daddy & his rules....eating cereal in the living room while watching cartoons & wearing pj's until I get home. Sounds a lot more fun than learning short division next to the bananas

great post, I wouldn't let my children use the TV in the grocery store if I had younger ones, because for me grocery shopping was fun, somehow I managed to keep them occupied, toddlers love to get things off the shelf for Mommy, as well as helping Mommy push, take a calculator along so they can use one while Mom does.

This all being said, if a parent wants to utilize the tv in a cart it does not make them a bad parent and in some instances can probably make Mommy or Daddy a happier shopper.

I always enjoyed talking to my kids during grocery shopping, but I'm not against the idea. Wouldn't it be cheaper for the stores to put in a daycare/nursery and pay for a full time worker? That way the kids could watch a movie or just play while mom gets groceries.
