Even if it is SoCal, I bet it still gets chilly and the water gets cold, can't swim or surf year round? That takes out majority of things to go do.

Text, did you ever hear of biking, hiking, rock climbing, bird watching, golfing, etc.? Swimming and surfing are not the ONLY activities that people do outside.

txt: it's not about the connecting to people, it's about the excessive use or attachment that some of us feel is unhealthy. In moderation these gadgets are wonderful tools. When they become something a person feels they can't get through a day without, that's the issue. It shows an unhealthy dependancy and insecurity.

Also, "off the grid" traditionally means someone who is not connected to public utilities, doesn't use traditional banks, etc. There are different terms to use for someone who chooses to live without gadgets or who chooses to disconnect from the electronic devices for a bit to take a nice break from them.

People definitely surf and swim year round. That takes out the majority of things to do? Have you ever actually been here?

Why would I not want to listen to music, read the news or read books for six months?

FYI the best surfing is usually in the winter. Two words: Wet suits.

Also FYI The vast majority of people in SoCal don't surf. So that leaves all of the activities mentioned above and plenty more. And Southern Californians even go to libraries! Imagine!

Where they sit in silence buried in a book, magazine or staring at a computer screen.

Shoot, you practically need a wet suit in the summer to swim, given the temps of the water even in southern California.
