We've used lilac bushes as privacy hedges also.....
We have one spot where we have done that too. Lilacs have got to be one of my favorite bushes. Mom had tons by the driveway growing up. And they grew wild as well. That's one of those imprints from childhood.
We couldn't grow them in Texas (too hot), so when we moved here, it's one of the first things I planted. I asked my mom about it at one point - she didn't remember any of the lilacs! Guess it was a bigger deal to me....
I think it's a combintion of the extreme heat and the terrain. We live in a very deserty area. No lawns (except for some of the horse ranches) and there might not be enough natural water for them. According to the bird books there are robins in AZ. Just not here.
I've done that. I don't think it will grow in Pittsburg but my go-to plant was Plumbago. It grows quickly, covers a large area once established and has beautiful flowers to boot.

I've never heard of Plumbago or Chokecherry. I'll have to research them to see if they grow here.
I have planted Laurel in the past, but our yard doesn't have the right acid balance for them. It's a shame because I'd like some evergreens too.

I love Lilac bushes! I'm lucky to have my neighbor's Lilac hedge going down one side of my yard for 60 feet.
They remind me of my mother because they bloom near Mother's Day in our region.

I spent the morning pruning some more. Saw a couple of fresh holes in the back yard which means snakes or rabbits. And we get rattlers. Since it's getting warm I have to start thinking about snakes. Yech.

Hopefully it's rabbits. No snakes for me, thank you.
My husband told me he saw a show about how rattlers are starting to evolve/adapt into not rattling anymore.
They say it's happening for survival because people hunt rattle snakes and the rattling gives thier location away.

Well, thanks very much for that very encouraging bit of information!
