My objection with pageants is that the supposed "reasons" for putting a child in pageants (confidence, conquering stage-fright, making friends, etc.) can be found in a number of activities that do not put an emphasis on looks.
I have always been turned off to this sort of thing and maybe it's b/c I can't get images of Jon Benet Ramsay out of my head. I remember once I was at a parade and someone left a little girl on top of a truck and ordered her to stay there and not mess up her hair or make-up and she just cried b/c she couldn't move and they had gone off somewhere to get hotdogs or something. I kept an eye on her b/c it would have been a perfect opp for a pedophile, as someone has mentioned.
allow me to explain...
we were discussing this at work, and a gal told a story where she watched one, that was so disturbing...the mother was holding the child and yelling at her little girl, and she whirled around, hitting the little girls head. well, the girl was next to go on, and she went on, crying and screaming...when the little girl came off stage, the mother said, "oh that was worth while" or something, never even considered the fact that she had hurt this child, the child was not only upset, but crying, cuz her head hurt...
to me, Child Services should in fact investigate these mothers...to me, this is abusive...
Agree 100%. I know of the JBR case from atty Lin Wood (met an associate). That case was bizarre, abusive to the child and look what it led to.
