Does your child's school have corporal punishment. What state do you live in?

I just found out that my sons school have this. I am shocked. I did not think this still existed in 2011. I opted out of course. No stranger is going to spank my child!
I am actually really surprised the schools even dare to allow such heinous acts considering the risks for law suits, not to mention other obvious reasons an adult stranger would spank a little kid in his or her office. Wow is all I can say.

I live in Mississippi!

Incredible. I thought that was a completely dead concept. I remember when I was in elementary school, parents had the option of letting their child be "paddled" at school. This was in the 80's, and it died out pretty quickly.

It's just amazing to me that in the day and age where you have to worry about a CPS report for spanking your own child, that they still allow corporal punishment in any school in America.

No. Even though we have lived in two states that permit it (FL and GA), in both cases we were careful to buy a home in school districts that did not allow the practice.

I posted this in an email to friends a number of mos back. I have 3 friends in OK, one in TX, & one in GA who all said their schools allow it & they are fine w/ it. I was just glad it's not allowed here. I did get a swat when I was in 1st grade, but, it wasn't hard (Catholic school, NE Ohio) . Hubby remembers his teachers being a bit more 'aggressive' in his school (eastern Ohio, a stone's throw from Wheeling, WV) . I was shocked it was still allowed here in the US as well.

Arkansas and no, our kids school doesn't have that.
I am not totally against CP, but it needs to be done by parents, not a school.

In the late 60's, my brother, who was in high school, was given a choice......3 whacks with the paddle.....or write an essay.....he chose the whacks.

His reasoning.....easier to take the whacks than write a paper. LOL

He wasn't scarred for life and we all still laugh about it to this day.

BTW.....that wasn't the only paddling he recieved during his school years.

The bad thing here is that if they are using corporal punishment then they don't endorse good skills for positive, effective discipline.

Way back when I was in school my parents made it very clear to me that the school had permission to spank me if I caused any trouble. Needless-to-say, I never once got into trouble in school. I think it's interesting how people (in general) talk about how we *used* to be able to do cp but that now we shouldn't because we "know better"; yet kids today seem to have the entitlement mentality worse than ever.

Here's a list of states that allow corporal punishment in schools, along with a list of states that do not allow it.

Corporal Punishment in Public Schools, by State — Infoplease.com

I'm not surprised Mississippi is on the list. If you notice, many of the states that allow it are politically conservative states.

Mississippi has the second highest number of students hit with Texas having the highest number.

Again, the most politically conservative states have the highest numbers for students hit.
