DD gets phase 1 braces off next week and they are offering me retainer insurance.
"Wire retainers cost $295 EACH. Replacement fees with policy are $60 EACH . Annual premium is $145"
She is 10, very responsible with her belongings, never lost a coat or hat, etc. We get 2 boxes for the retainers and I'm thinking if she is trained to put her retainers in the box and put it in her cubby BEFORE lunch we won't have the retainers-on-the-tray accident I hear about.
Doesn't sound like much of a deal to me. You would only save $50.00 if it needed replacing. Since you say your DD is responsible, I wouldn't do it, heck, I might not even bother if you said she was careless.
The price difference just isn't that great.
I was a very irresponsible 6th grader when I got a retainer and I NEVER lost it. In fact, I still wear the exact same one to this day. I think it's kind of a waste.

thanks- we never buy extended warranties or anything like that either as I feel they are a rip off. I think we will just attach her name, classroom and phone number to the retainer box and make sure she takes it off in her class room before lunch.

I a not sure why type of retainer she is getting. But i have the "old fashioned" metal and plastic one for the top and it actually has my phone number and name on a label made into the retainer it's self. This kind you can actually eat with it on.
My bottom one is the clear kind that goes over your teeth, that done doesn't.
With people these days taking better care of their teeth, dentists and orthodontists have definitely figured out creative ways to get $$ from us. Capitalizing on our anxieties seems to be the predominant method.
If your daughter is responsible, she should do fine with her retainer. Follow your instincts, as with the extended warranties.
Epoxy 5 or a roll of duct tape each cost about $5. Take your pick.
