So teachers can't call a "Michael" "Mike"??? That's just silly. I can see needing the full legal name on paperwork for the school (transcripts, etc.) but not for everything.
I've never heard of that, but I have been out of teaching since the 90s. We used to ask the kids what they preferred and called them by that nickname. We never had a problem with inappropriate nicknames though.

Yep, that.....and/or.... they are so consumed with feeding their own egos by choosing a "unique" name, that they are blinded to the curse they are bestowing upon their child.
