What is the difference between skinny jeans and leggings?

It would seem obvious skinny jeans are stretch denims while leggings are stretch knits but Oh No says my 9 year old while she rolls her eyes. I don't know anything.

She tried on skinny jeans at the store and didn't like them and she says she doesn't like leggings but does like tights. Now her buds are wearing skinny jeans and she thinks she wants to try them again. I was hoping I had a few years before we got into "I don't have anything to wear" phase but it has hit us with great force this fall. Help!!!

Skinny jeans are actual jeans with the low waist and tight legs. They only fit a certain body type in that age group, and are VERY uncomfortable. As I have found out, it is a big deal in that age group. We managed to find some Levis that look like skinny jeans but are actually stretch fabric, and way more comfortable. Good luck, the skinny jean issue is driving me nuts at our casa.

It is tricky, because you want to help your kids fit in with peers, and look age appropriate. I just took my daughter to the "Lucky" store.

There are slim cut jeans for boys. They have a similar look to skinny jeans but are not quite as tight and thus not as uncomfortable. My son had a pair of skinny jeans but he complained that they hurt his testicles. I am not kidding. The slim cut has a similar look but they are easier to wear.

Do they make similar jeans for girls?

I believe you! DS had a similar problem in elementary school. Being a women, I had no clue jeans could do that to boys and men. Back when he went to school, kids wore tight jeans or super, super baggie ganster jeans. He didn't like the baggy style. We went everywhere to find jeans that weren't too baggy nor too tight.

When I got frustrated, I reminded myself of how many bathing suits and jeans I have to try on before I found ones that fit.

Another difference is that leggings are designed to be worn under long shirts or dresses because they fit like panty hose (skin tight hugging every inch of skin) while skinny jeans can be worn with regular shirts because the emphasis on the skinny is in the legs and not the whole thing.

In schools here, leggings cannot be worn any other way than with long tops or dresses because they just show too much detail around areas that most females do not want exposed. There are plenty of out of school females who dare to wear leggings with everything showing and it's not too pleasant to view most times. That is just not an issue with skinny jeans as the material is too thick.

Oh, and with skinny jeans you simply cannot wear any footwear that cannot go on the outside of the jeans like you can with regular jeans.

No Kudzu - here are the leggings I was talking about, they look exactly like the skinny jeans:

Kids Girls Clothing - Buy Girl's Dresses 7 16, Kids Girls Jeans, Girl's Clothing 7 16 and more from Levi's

Thanks everybody for taking the time to answer. I told her girls and women need to be very careful about tight pants and jeans because it can hurt and also poor air circulation and moist clothes can cause problems. I think she understands.

Actually she is very modest and would never even want to wear leggings without a skirt or dress but when she sees her friends with skinny jeans, it appeals to her. Our first lesson in peer pressure and individuality as far as clothes. Another thing is that her sister - only 4 months younger-both adopted-likes the skinny jeans and can pull it off. she is quite slim with bird- like legs and skinny jeans don't look too tight on her.

For all these years they have shared every single piece of clothing but their different body types are showing now so I guess those sharing days will be limited. Too sad....

Regarding boy's jeans. I often wondered how boys and men could wear those way too tight jeans. It looks very uncomfortable and down right dangerous.

My DD (7) will wear jeggings or leggings, but not skinny jeans. She wants more flexibility. She wants to be able to sit on the floor and be able to breathe at the same time. One nice thing about leggings being back in is that DD's dresses are lasting longer. If her dress is too short, but still fits around the top she wears leggings underneath and looks really cute.
