Temperature does matter. Breast milk should not be frozen, nor overheated. The jury is out on shaking it, but once it's warmed up a bit, you shouldn't need to shake it too vigorously.
Yes, the bottle warmer is good as long as it doesn't get too hot.
What do you mean breastmilk shouldnt be frozen? Then why do they make the freezer storage bag? i have alot of breastmilk frozen, enough to feed my daughter for a month straight.
Do I recall there is a temperature at which the heat kills off some of the good stuff in the milk? Anyone? Or am I so past breastfeeding that my memory is off?
Temperature matters. Too hot can kill cells and denature proteins. Freezing will also kill some of the cells. This is why fresh is always better than frozen if you have a choice. It doesn't mean that frozen milk is no good, it is just less good than fresh. Shaking can also denature proteins.
By that token, then, breastmilk is not a waste product on par with those things because ...? It's treated like a biohazard, along with other bodily fluids, so in that respect they're all waste products.
Are special precautions needed for handling breast milk?
No special precautions exist for handling expressed human milk, nor does the milk require special labeling. It is not considered a biohazard. The Universal Precautions to prevent the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis B virus, and other bloodborne pathogens do not apply to human milk.
It's tempting you heat up a bottle, the baby doean't want it, and you don't want to discard it.
LOL.... wow, glad to hear THAT! When my daughter was in the NICU, many, many years ago, I was pumping off and freezing breast milk, which I would then transport, in a cooler, to the NICU.
