Right now my kids have been/will be reading some of the classics. EX: Old Yeller, Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, The Incredible Journey, Sounder, Where the Red Fern Grows The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Phantom Tollbooth, Swiss Family Robinson, Treasure Island and others.

My son loved almost everything by Andrew Clements and Louis Sachar. His favorite book in elementary school was "Wayside School is Falling Down".

Another vote for the Boxcar Children.

I also recommend anything by Louis Sachar. Two of my favorites are Holes and There's a Boy in the Girl's Bathroom. Those are two fantastic books.

A few books that stood out to me around that age were My Teacher is an Alien by Bruce Coville (there are 4 in the series and he has other similar books I enjoyed), Frindle by Andrew Clements, and several Louis Sachar books (Holes, Sideways Stories from Wayside School, Marvin Redpost series, and Sixth Grade Secrets, though the last one is from a girl's perspective).

Looking back over my list, I highly suggest the Sideways Stories series. It's a very funny book and has a few equally funny sequels.

I second a lot of what has been mentioned (A Series of Unfortunate Events, Artemis Fowl, Holes, Hoot, Eragon, The Hobbit). My kids like Edward Gorey, too.

My oldest, who was an extremely voracious reader, also enjoyed The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Edge Chronicles, the Redwall series, and the Pendragon series. If your son read Cirque du Freak he may also like the Demonata series by the same author. If he likes funny, check out Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, Superfudge, Doublefudge, etc.
