SEMINOLE COUNTY, Fla. — The son of a Seminole County sheriff's deputy is facing felony charges for possession of child porn.
Investigators said the deputy's son was keeping the porn on a cellphone. The deputy took his son's cellphone away to punish him for something and found a locked file with a suspicious name: "Photos/videos 13-15 years old."
This man is absolutely correct in his action. Child porn is child porn. Even if he wasnt a deputy he should have done that anyway. You cant let someone be a pedophile, you have to take measures to ensure the safety of children. Good for this dad.
I guess I'm glad that the guy is 18 and not 40, but still. I don't know what anyone would want with a 13-year-old. Gross.
While the deputy's action was correct in terms of the law, downloaded porn is a problem, but we have no way of knowing the real age of any girls in these videos and pictures either. I don't think we can assume an 18 year old looking at teenagers in porn is a pedophile. I in no way condone what he did and I am glad his dad turned him in.
Still, the young man is 18 and probably in high school. When I was in high school many of the freshman girls who were 13 did date seniors who were 18. That's a five year difference in age.
I know many people who are married to men 5 or 6 years older than they are and it is not frowned upon.

I agree that the deputy's son is not necessarily a pedophile. That's a term that is thrown around a lot yet frequently misunderstood. Being sexually attracted to post-pubescent teenagers is not pedophilia. I do not condone what this young man did, and the fact that he had a folder labeled "13 to 15" sounds ooky to say the least. Sexting with girls from your own school would be one thing--inappropriate and possibly worthy of punishment, IMO, but probably not worthy of being a lifelong registered sex offender. However, if these pics are from other sources and this fellow has a demonstrated desire to track down naked pictures of young teens, then that is exploitative child porn and deserves a much harsher punishment.

I don't know how i feel about this. On one hand if he is a pedophile this might shock him into not doing it again, but i have doubts there. I on the other hand am not sure *baring my kid created an awful crime* i could ever turn them in. But julia and nana are both right in the fact he is a Hebephilie and not a pedophile, and that the age gap attraction would still be normal given biology trumps social views on it.

The deputy did what was right, I'm sure it was not an easy choice. I'm not sure I'd slap the pedophile label on him, but then that comes down to exactly where he was getting the images from and who he was sharing them with. Pics girls he knows sent him, that he then shared with his buddies is a little different then pics he collected off the internet and swapped with strangers.
The age gap makes it less offensive, but chances are if this is his addiction, he won't always be 18, but the girls he likes will always be 13-15, at some point it will become really wrong. Better to intervene now then when he is older.

But is it worth it if the cost is at him being labeled a sex offender for life when this is something that might alter as he gets older? I mean when i was 18 i liked a 16 year old boy....boy now i wouldn't because there would be an emotional along with maturity imbalance.
And to be honest given his bond is so low nana might be right in that they can't really tell the age.
