Anaya could be any race or ethnicty in my opinion. Anyway, don't worry about it. There are white females named Keesha and black females named Kelly. It's so not important in the grand scheme of things.

So true! I'm 100% German, but have a Russian name. One of my sisters has a middle eastern name, while my youngest sister has an English name. Love the variety!

This is not the first time i have heard this, has anyone else ever heard this??

by the way my daughters name is Anaya and we are white.
That nurse needs to be talked to about discrimination. that was totally unprofessional. I think anyone saying that is a bigot.

Discrimination? That's quite a stretch.

Yes, there are.

Would this conversation be different if the kids name was Jill and the child was black? She really thinks the name says it all? Rude is rude. She works with the public. I think that's the point. If there were a black family within earshot that might have come off with 2 victims of rudeness. She should learn some tact, right now she doesn't realize she needs to. I'd at least make a note of it with the office so she learns that not all black people name their child Keesha and not all white people name their kid Kelly. If she is old enough to work with the public, she should at least know this by now.

The thing is Latisha isn't AA. Trendy names for black people aren't the same as names that signify nationality like Jose, Maria or Sisi (Ghanda). That is the problem, names like Keesha, Latisha, are just trends, they don't signify nationality. Just race. I think that is the problem. Oh, it sounds to funky to be white. must be a black kid.
Now do you see the rudeness in it? Or should I say, ignorance, prejudice maybe??

No race 'owns' any name, IMO. My DD is Isabella, & her Italian relatives think it's an Italian name, & she is 'Eeeessssaaaa-bellllaaaaahhhhh'. lol Our Hispanic friends regard her name as Hispanic.

It was just the only girls name we agreed on. lol

Whoa. This is why things get out of hand so quickly in this country.

There was no discrimination. Discrimination REQUIRES that someone be denied an opportunity or restricted from participating in something based on their race. Obviously that did not happen here.

Second, to be a BIGOT, the nurse would have had to be hostile about the race of the child, either the perceived one based on her name or her actual race. Again, that did not happen.

So at worst the woman was thoughtless, insensitive and yes, unprofessional. She was NOT a bigot nor did she discriminate against this child. Using those terms inappropriately downplays their importance when they are actually needed.

Exactly.

In fact we don't know the race of the nurse, it could have just as easily been a black or white nurse being puzzled about a white kid having a name much more often used by blacks.

It's really no big deal. It's just like names that "belong" to certain generations. It's hardly a secret that often black families use certain names rarely used by whites.
