This may seem obvious, but I never thought about it before . . .

When you get married and have kids, you think of that unit as your "family," and it goes into first position . . . (for the people I know).

But the funny thing is that the concept is progressive . . .so those kids that you think of as your "family," will probably relegate you to second position "family" when they have their own.

Just saying.

Yes, and that's why in a Chriustian wedding the vows even say "Leave father and mother".

Parents aren't supposed to try to keep their children around as possessions or pets, they're supposed to raise children to become independent functioning adults. You don't see mother and father birds trying to keep adult children birds in the nest forever, they work hard to feed them and teach them to fly so they'll fly off and build their own nests.

agreed, as it should be. that's why I can't understand the folks who get their tail in a knot when we discuss sending young adults out on their own, not letting them sponge off us into their twenties and thirties and trying to teach them how to be independent.
