Let me guess, it wouldn't be a Catholic school, would it?
No, it's not, it is a public school - same thing with all the public schools around my area. Funny thing is, my kids go to Catechism on Sunday before church at a Catholic School and they don't use that form of discipline there.
Spanking is a form of discipline at the school my children attend.
Every industrialized country in the world with the exception of the US, Canada and one Australian state prohibit corporal punishment in school.
Poland eliminated it as early as 1783, Japan in 1900, Germany in 1970, South Africa in 1996 ....
I believe there are 27 US states that have bans on corporal punishment in schools, with others working on legislation.
I was unfamiliar with CP in schools coming from NJ to NC. Frankly, I was shocked that such a thing still existed in our schools and that many, many parents remained very supportive. Unfortunately, Black students, boys particularly, and students with special needs were disproportionately imacpted by school sanctioned spankings.
There is a poster here, Pegmomof4 (if I am not mistaken) who spearheaded the elimination of CP in Union County schools. The school board was divided for a long time and it was mostly viewed as a cultural issue. Many feel like Yankees were coming to the South and imposing our views on them.
Now, I stated earlier than I don't spank however, if I did spank, I would definitely not permit someone other than myself of DH to do so. How does someone who does not love your child control themself during such an action? They have no vested interest in your child's safety nor well-being. I think allowing school administrators to take matters in their own hands lends itself to children more likely to be brutalized.
More than 40 national organizations favor abolition of corporal punishment, led by the American Academy of Pediatrics, American Medical Association, American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association and the National Mental Health Association.
During the years 1999-2000 (the latest year I could find stats), Mississippi, Arkansas, Alabama, Tenessee and Oklahoma were the top five states for paddling children in school.
I'm still floored that anyone could think this is OK. How does one justify physically assaulting a child? Adults go to jail for this type of behaviour when just adults are involved.
I don't think anyone deserves to be slapped across the face, child or adult for that matter. It is degrading, and if I ever witnessed it in public, I would definately speak my mind......IMO folks....sorry. Jeannie
Hey Jeannie216!! how are ya!!! ya know, Joe is starting a new job on Monday!! he he
Anyway, I hate to disagree with ya here, but hopefully you'll understand. I was working at a racecar event a few years back, and was passing out some flyers when a man came up to me and grabbed my "how do I say this politely" he didn't grab my behind, he grabbed me in the front and not my chest!!!!
Anyway, I dropped what I was doing -chased after him and slapped him as hard as I could across the face!! Hopefully he'll think again before assaulting a woman!!
You missed a couple of options in your poll. I wasn't spanked when I was a kid, I was pummeled. Hence, I learned to respect adults, all adults, not just my parents. As such, I've taught my kids to respect adults, and they do, and neither have ever been spanked. Spanking in my humble opinion is an issue that some use as an arguing point of right and wrong and I'd humbly disagree. Nowadays, kids know and are coached that if anyone touches them, they can cause a ruckus, get someone arrested, have the local Government get involved, and that is just wrong. Parents should be able to discipline their kids.
Great post Delaneyland, me and my brothers were spanked as kids, not that much though! I was only spanked once by my father, and let me tell you, I had done something really bad, and after my spanking (which was only two smacks across my bottom) I never misbehaved like that again.

He had that coming. Jail time should have been a part of the equation too. Glad you fought back.

Sara
Hey Sara, thanks for the information!! I'm haven't really put much thought into the spanking thing at the school. My kids have good manners and behave themselves. My son is also a "special needs" child and he doesn't have any behavioral problems at school.
As I said earlier my father spanked me once when I was a child, I didn't feel like I was being physically assaulted, even at the time.
Well, once you are a parent, it's your prerogative to set the rules.
That's why I started posting on this thread; it reminded me of the fact that some people want to take that away, making it illegal to raise children the way my parents raised me.
I don't like the idea of teachers or anyone else deciding if or when to spank my child, (if I had one) to me that should be left for the parents to decide.
Spanking is a form of discipline at the school my children attend.
And I bet the kids there don't get out of hand like they would in a school where there is not spanking! The kids know there is going to be a big consiquence if they really screw up! I think this is great. They probably hardly ever have to spank, too! Just knowing that it is a possibility keeps these kids in line. Am I right?
I didn't assume you meant me. I was responding to what you wrote. Kids fear punishment no matter what type it may be, not me.
