There is danger in everything but you take precautions and you handle things as you go.
Do you know how many cuts, scrapes and bruises little kids get from playing?
TG's neice is ALWAYS tripping. Should we just make her sit all the time and place her in a bubble when she walks?
Kids fall off bikes, they slip off skateboards, fall out of trees, lots of stuff happens, everyday.
Even adults get hurt.
But we take precautions and handle things as they come.
Yes these deaths are sad but lots of things can kill us like driving, you can die pretty much doing anything but it shouldn't stop us from living life and doing fun things. Most sports are dangerous but obesity kills too. I rather die on the field athletic and skinny than on my couch fat and covered in burger toppings from a McDouble because I had a heart attack.

You enjoy extremes. As if there is no medium between playing football, a sport that is proving everyday to be more dangerous than most others, and being on your couch "fat and covered in burger toppings from a McDouble because I had a heart attack".
We will encourage athletics. No contact sports, however. There's no reason for it. You can get fit, learn about team play, work on coordination and self esteem, etc, without having to play something that turns your brain to mush from repetitive subconcussive injuries.
Any sport can result in injury. Football, by design, will cause some level of brain damage to everyone who plays it.
Also, I would like him to really get into something he can play his whole life. Like tennis.

Soccer isn't too contact, its not that bad, a little contact but no where near the level of football.

I'm just saying. If we lived in fear of getting hurt, all we would do was sit in the couch and get fat and then die from heart attacks.

We don't have to live in fear, but we also don't have to be so dumb, we sit around on the couch and hit ourselves in the head with a hammer over and over and over and over.

But people are so afraid of things like broken bones and cuts and scrapes. That stuff heals, I don't get why a broken bone is so bad.
Yes, I have had them before, yes it hurts but it wasn't the end of the world.
Great thread, and very timely as my 11 year-old always asks to play football. It is the popular sport around here, and hard to explain to my son why I would prefer he didn't.
Quote:
The adolescent football player's brain is rattled an average of 650 times per season. That's just an average. There are positions on the football field where the numbers approach 1,000 hits to the head. And while a small fraction of those hits actually lead to a diagnosable concussion, the concern is that sub-concussive damage - the menacing smaller blows that add up during practices and games - could be as bad, or worse, for the brain.

There is nothing wrong with a healthy dose of fear. Fearing life-long brain trauma from a recreational sport is not paranoia. It's a risk-benefit analysis. I don't believe the risk is worth the benefits. Especially when the benefits can be found in a multitude of other sports.

Did you even read the article? It isn't about broken bones, cuts and scrapes!!! It's about irreversible brain damage. You know, the kind of damage that makes a man in his 40s have the brain of an Alzheimer patient in his 70s?
