When I grew up we did and wore all of the above and worse. We all managed to turn out ok. I remember wearing hip huggers and belly showing halter tops to school and it didn't seem to cause an up-roar
Heck, we used to have nude relays atleast once a week, boys and girls. It's just no fun to be a kid anymore.
Texas schools are the worst.
That is a hot and humid state and shorts have to be mid thigh and no tank tops, so all shirts have to have sleeves.

I do think punishing him was silly given that what he did did not disrupt anything really. They would have really come down hard on my senior class - the year before ours brought in alarm clocks all set for the same time the day before school ended. The alarm clocks went off and everyone got up and left class.
They suspended everyone they caught, so my year, we brought mice in. They didn't catch anyone for that so they could not suspend us, but it was much more disruptive to the school.
