No allowance for the basic stuff like cleaning ones room, doing laundry, or cleaning dishes. But we got a chart with money marked off for various extra stuff, which we could choose to do as much or as little as we wanted. So like i might of gotten 5 dollars to mow the lawn,1 dollar to water the gardens, and .50 cents to weed. It taught a good work ethic/value lesson i felt.

I had a lot of chores when I was a kid... of course, I hated it then. Looking back with an adult perspective, I would say that it was too much.

My kids are 11 and 9, and I think they have a reasonable number of chores.

11 year old: unload the dishwasher every morning, help with general picking up, take out garbage, take garbage down to street weekly, scoop cat box once per day, occasionally switch laundry, occasionally run vacuum, straighten living room each day.
9 year old: bring recycling out, bring recycling down to curb each week, general picking up, scoop cat box once per day, general wipe down kids bathroom every few days, occasionally sweep or run vacuum, sometimes help with dinner.

They each get $5 per week, plus I pay for whatever activities they want to do, within reason. That's not really related to chores, though... they do what I tell them to do because that's just what you do when you live in a house/with a family.
