Not sure why some posters have been giving you a hard time -- been enjoying this thread with some of the suggestions -- I'm a new mom and like to see ideas about different ways to play with my little boy. I don't think anything you said suggested that he couldn't play by himself though others took it that way.
You did mention that you like to let him play with magazines and such -- have you seen the Indestructibles books? They are paper like but can't be torn, chewed to death, etc.
My kids used to love going to the pet store. The fish aquariums were a real fascination and the puppies were always good for a giggle.
Mine used to love getting into the tupperware cabinet and pulling everything out. Pop toys into some of the containers, put the lids on and let them figure out how to get the toys back out - shake, rattle, thump...
There are a couple of fun things to do that will be unusual. Get some clear contact paper and tape it sticky side out to the floor. If he is crawling, let him crawl over it and see what happens. If not, he can sit and put his hands on it to feel the stickyness. You can also cut up paper and let him stick it too the contact paper - his very own first art collage. You can do this at the table or at his high chair.
Another fun activity is to sit him in his high chair with some pudding and let him make a mess. You can use anything that works that is edible since he will probably put it in his mouth. When he is older and not eating everything in site, you can use shaving cream for this activity.
Mine used to like "painting" with water. I'd give them a paintbrush and a bucket of water and let them "paint" our sliding glass doors. They also got a lot of mileage out of water filled squirt bottles and clean spray bottles. 7 months is a little young for that, but it's an idea to keep in mind for when he's a toddler (won't be long!).
Cannot for the life of my figure out why the play pool (or regular pool) is so fascinating and sitting on a play mat or high chair (or even the stroller sometimes) isn't as interesting.
I swear...you might get (if you're lucky) 20 minutes of play mat time. But the play pool is infinite. ????????
