Another thing that has been a constant with my kids is this saying, "Remember that the children who are saying mean things...are just kids, just like you. They are too young to understand the real damage their words can cause. Remember, they're just kids and sometimes, when kids feel insecure and helpless, or sad about their own lives, they will lash out. Try to have compassion for those kids, because they may be so jealous of your happiness, that they have to bring you down to their level of pain. Try to reach out and comfort those who do this, because chances are...they're only trying to dump off some of their misery. They may think that it's totally unfair for you to be so happy, when they're so sad. It could be pure hell at their house, because some homes are pure hell. Again, have compassion and take it with a grain of salt."
Obviously, good parenting takes precedent....but, one simple maxim to live by?
I usually say, " Be good to yourself and do good to others." ...every morning.
You?

It is not from the benevolence of the butcher, the brewer, or the baker that we expect our dinner, but from their regard to their own interest. - Adam SMith
No one is here to give you anything. self-interest is king. Nothing is free, understand this and you understand how the world works.

Something along the lines of - learn to think, understand the human biases that prevent logic. . . thinking is not something that comes naturally.
"Thinking is skilled work. It is not true that we are naturally endowed with the ability to think clearly and logically - without learning how, or without practicing."Alfred Mander

Another good quote from Mander's book:
"The essence of critical thinking centres not on answering questions but on questioning answers."

Pay attention.
That would be the standard upon which all other standards are built.
