As a single mom I always worked from home when those situations came up. If I had a job where that wasn't possible I think I would have a contingency plan (friend, neighbor, relative) with a few different options arranged in advance. Don't most people? Kids get sick and parents have to work.
There is no one but a grandparent that I'd leave a sick kid with. Not for the kid's sake, but for the adult's. Now that we live far away from grand parents, we have no plan other than one of us stays home.

Most people do I'm sure. Though there are some who simply don't have those options available to them.
I don't agree with sending a small child to school or day care when they have a high fever, and are actively ill, but everyone's situation for dealing with childcare options is different.
I do think some of the rules in place encourage people to circumvent them. Our school has a rule that children must be fever-free for 24 hours. So if a child has the last fever at 10am, they must miss the next day of school too. If that means missing another days of wages, I can see why people would not abide by such rules.

That's pretty much how it works at school, too, btw.
Oh no, its plenty black and white as i see it. Sending a sick child to daycare is probably A) against their policies, and they will probably call you to pick the child up anyway. B) exposing everyone in that facility to being sick C) Causing a worker to pay more special attention to your sick child when they probably need to be paying attention to other kids too
That's part of the problem with today's society, people do things without bothering to think about how it will impact other people. Selfish indeed.

I am arguing about colds because many people believe that constitutes sickness and absence from daycare/school.
The rule is black and white. The reasons why parents may try to skirt the rule, however, are many shades of gray.

Parents "like that" often don't have a choice - they don't have a neighbor, friend, relative, church buddy, etc to leave their child with in the event of sickness.

Then you stay home.
I don't see how the daycare choice is even a choice when they are just going to bounce the kid anyway for having a fever.
But not before typhoid Timmy has made sure to get half the other kids sick.
Ensuring that now a dozen other parents have the same problem.
