When I was a kid I asked to wear makeup when I started junior high. I was 11 (almost 12) when I started. I don't think makeup is a big deal.
Me too! I went to catholic school and in 1972, maybelline was making colored mascaras (purple, green, etc) so we wore that (I liked it better that that hooker blue eye shadow) we always got demerits if the nuns caught us!
I didn't want to wear makeup until like 11th grade (so 15/16) but my mom just said she would've been ok if I has asked at age 13 which would've been 8th grade
Both of my daughters started to wear makeup in 6th grade, but they just used mascara/lipgloss (their choice). They each had their heavier make up "stage" (eye shadow, eyeliner, foundation, blush) in 8th grade, but by 9th/10th they grew out of the obnoxious make up and went back to the natural look. My 11th grader doesn't wear any make up now. Go figure? I never said anything, I let them figure out how ridiculous it looked all by themselves

I started Jr. High in the mid 1970s and I also loved the colored mascaras. I have green eyes so I liked the purple mascara and did not care for the hooker blue eye shadow. I went to public school so we were allowed to wear makeup. I fail to see what the big deal is if middle school kids wear some make up.
I was not allowed to wear make-up or get my ears pierced until I was 16. I think girls these days wear make-up a lot earlier than I was kid. I assume they approach their parents at an earlier age now to wear make-up because their peers are.
DD played with makeup in middle school but didn't really start wearing regularly until highschool when she figured out how to do up her eyes. That's really all she does now at age 25 too, unless she has breakouts to cover.
I started chapstick and lipgloss around 7th grade. Mascara, eyeliner, and eyeshadow around 9th grade. I was 'allowed' to wear more by 10th grade but never did.
I don't wear make-up unless the occasion calls for it, which means basically never. My daughter seems to be taking after me. I think she was about 12 when she first experimented with a little eyeshadow and clear mascara, and then she seemed to lose interest.
Growing up we were allowed to do lip gloss and maybe mascara around 13 or so. It was a big deal in our house to officially be a teenager. That's when we started to get the goodies LOL.
Now that I am a mom I could see myself letting my daughter start lip gloss -level stuff when she starts middle school. The more serious stuff has to wait for high school.

What kind of make up is "serious"? It's just makeup. It washes off with soap and water.
