have you ever brought your child to watch r rated movies. of course, common sense say not to bring but me and wife wants to watch this movie.
it's saturday so no school and he doesnt a have baby sitter.
is there really a big effect on children watching these movies? or they do know it's a just movie?
i remember watching r rated movies as a child. i dont think it ever had an effect on me in a bad way. i always thought it was just a movie even when i was just a child.
Do you really need to ask this question? Wait until it is on netflix or get a sitter. I want to do a lot of things but don't because I have kids to take care of.
I would certainly not take a young child to see that particular movie. It's scary and based on having children captured and killed by witches. I could see that giving a 5 year old nightmares especially since the blood and violence are so graphic and real.
Here's the thing. Even IF your five year old can separate fantasy from reality and understand that it is "just a movie", such disturbing / scary images and gore and so forth can still have really severe and long lasting effects. There are plenty of studies out there that back this up.
I will give you a bit of anecdotal evidence though. When I was seven or eight, my older brother was in charge of babysitting me and he wanted to, instead, hang out in the garage smoking pot and playing pool with his buddies. So he sat me down in front of the TV and let me watch "The Exorcist". I was terrified for years from that one movie, but if you'd asked me at the time I would have sworn to you that I was fine and old enough to not be scared. False bravado. I had nightmares that lasted years, no exaggeration.
It's not worth the risk, really.
