My 11 y o daughter will be in middle school next year and I think I would be upset if she had to be random drug tested. We don't have this here but I'm sure some of you do. How do you feel about it?

I know kids are messing with drugs younger and younger but 11 and 12 seems so young to be drug tested. Maybe 13-14.

I can see it for athletics but not for scrapbooking club. I'm really torn on this. I would like to think I would be like the Mom in this story. After all I believe "Dissention is another form of Patriotism" and if I thought my kids constitutional rights were being violated I would act. but I don't know.

Wait. People who are younger than 18 don't have their civil rights protected? Don't have the assumption of innocence until proof of guilt? Are not subject to due process?

I'll believe in drug testing without proof or definite suspicion when they drug test and alcohol test every member of Congress every day before they step in the House or Senate chamber.

You are so right. I lived in D.C. and worked on the Hill and if the general public was made aware of all that goes on ...well it wouldn't be pretty. But I digress...

Apparently not if nine states have mandatory drug testing for middle schools.

The kids using drugs in the early years aren't the ones joining teams or clubs. It does become somewhat more prevalent in high school. Our local HS lacrosse team is nationally ranked, and it's not even a secret how many team members smoke pot. I'm friends with mothers of two of the players, and they are the ones who told me their students used it. Neither parent seems to feel it is a major problem though, interestingly enough.

I never objected to the boys being randomly drug tested for sports in HS, because I wanted them to think long and hard in case they ever got tempted to try steroids. We have been fortunate.

I do think schools should have the right to bring in drug sniffing dogs. The administration has the responsibility to keep drugs out of the schools. At home, that responsibility falls to the parents, especially in middle school.

I suggest that the test be all in one bucket and we just get the results in one test for the whole class?

At least a little (very little) comedy might arise from the whole thang.

I have never dealt with drug testing in our school, but my thought is that I would rather know and do something about it if my pre-adolescent child is experimenting with drugs. If she / he is clean for drugs...then no worries. If he / she comes up positive...then there are bigger concerns than her / his civil rights being violated.

I am not a fan of drug testing for middle school kids but nobody's civil rights are being violated.

Playing a sport or joining a club are not constitutionally protected rights. They are privileges and school districts are permitted to require the kids to jump through hoops, including drug testing, if they want to play. Now-I think it is a waste of money to drug test middle school kids but that is different from saying their rights are being violated.
